Your favorite elements of a college lecture (the discussion, duh), meets embodiment explorations, meets community engagement, meets reading circle adjacent! We will gather for a small meditation and check-in, followed by a quick guided movement, reading of our texts together, discussion, followed by more movement, creative exploration (writing/drawing/making of any kind), before we close out with a final discussion time.

5 week series: $50-$150

THE WHATS:

Movement Philosophy is a space to gather together to read writings (articles, poems, songs, essays, & more) and explore them through movement, the arts, and community. In an attempt to take the academy outside of the institutional walls, in an attempt to tap into the wisdom innate within our bodies, in an attempt to trust the wisdom of the land, how might we be in relationship to the text alongside one another? Your favorite elements of a college lecture (the discussion, duh), meets embodiment explorations, meets community engagement, meets reading circle adjacent! We will gather for a small meditation and check-in, followed by a quick guided movement, reading of our texts together, discussion, followed by more movement, creative exploration (writing/drawing/making of any kind), before we close out with a final discussion time.

Bardeaux's Blend

A tea + sound ritual by Leo Bardeaux

Leo has blended the tea by hand and curated a soundscape to move with its taste: grounding, warmth, and light. Every sip, every note, every person in the room becomes part of the blend.

This is about slowing down and sharing space. About creating something outside the noise of nightlife and the chaos of the week. A moment to be present, connect, and experience music and tea as one ritual. The blend isn’t just in the cup or in the speakers, it’s in the energy of everyone who shows up.

All ages welcome

Bowels of the Earth by Iván Espinosa

Bowels of the Earth by Iván Espinosa

Bowels of the Earthby choreographer Iván Espinosa is a meditation on the human body's connection to decomposition.

Iván's Bowels of the Earth choreography engages thematically with Tatsumi Hijikata’s concepts of death and decomposition in the context of 21st-century ecological crises and global climate change, while embodying decomposition through the transformative power of Butoh dance.  For, decomposition is also the force of nature that radically transforms the dying human self into new organic life: we return to the soil, and become a part of the subterranean earth.  How can a dance of decomposition act as a kind of ecological praxis, reminding us that we are not separate from nature and the environment nor from the decaying aspects of life in which all beings, bodies, and entities are entangled?  In its descent toward the mud and sod of the earth, Butoh invites us to dance and commune with death and decomposition.  In the words of Hijikata, "the dancer, through the butoh spirit, confronts the origins of his fears: a dance which crawls towards the bowels of the earth."

This performance is a fundraising effort for the group’s upcoming performance at the 2025 Vienna International Butoh Festival.

TIX: $30 donation, here.

Mad Myth Science / JOEL / Sabbagh + Maraist

some music, some movement

doors @ 7
show @ 7:30

$5-$20 at the door

Mad Myth Science is the collective musical offering of Molly Jones, Julian Otis, Wilson Tanner Smith, and Ben Zucker. Their through-improvised performances present a rich cross-section of Chicago creativity, bringing experience in jazz and creative music, contemporary composition, electronics, and dance and theatrical performing arts together into a pageantry of sound and spontaneous rituals.

Cristal Sabbagh is a teaching interdisciplinary artist influenced by film, history, politics, Butoh and improvised sound. In her performances, her goal is to embody transformational memories, challenge power structures, and awaken viewers' senses. Cristal has found that working with live improvised music has inspired her best work, which has become vital to her practice.

She is currently curating and performing in Freedom From and Freedom To as an opportunity to combine most of her creative interests in a risk-taking and vulnerable way. It uses an ensemble of dancers and improvising musicians that are remarkably diverse in their approaches to dance, instrumentation, and backgrounds.

amanda maraist is a movement deviser + improviser from the texas gulf coast, living in chicago.

she co-directs bim bom studios + works collaboratively with movers, musicians and artists. most recently with Irene Hsiao, Helen Lee, Harlan Rosen, Gina Hoch-Stall, Chrissy Martin, Freedom From and Freedom To, Khecari, Ayako Kato / Art Union Humanscape and independently.

her movement work exists as both dance-making and physical space-making. using authentic movement practices and meticulously rendered improvisational scores, her work is process-forward with a do-it-together demeanor.

she is supported by a 2024 Links Hall Co-MISSIONS Residency, a 2025 residency at the Ragdale Foundation, a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, and is a Synapse Arts New Works artist for 2025. bim bom studios is a 2024 recipient of the City of Chicago’s Small Business Improvement Fund grant for capital improvements, and has also received programming support from the Cook County Small Business Bureau’s Source Fund in 2024.

ROUGH HOUSE tour kick-off show

Help Rough House Theater Co. kick off their summer tour with a preview of Out With It

In the languages of clown, found-object puppetry, and visual poetry, Claire Saxe’s Out With It tells a playful and lyrical tale about holding things in and letting things go. Our fastidious protagonist seeks to keep her space in order, while “wildness” creeps in at every turn. In a relentless –and often messy– battle of wills, our tenacious clown comes head to head with her own chaos. Will order prevail? Will wildness win? One thing is certain: There’s only room on this stage for one of them…
