movement philosophy

facilitated by Madison Mae Parker

Movement Philosophy gathers to read writings (articles, poems, songs, essays, & more) and explore them through movement, the arts, and community. In an attempt to take the academy outside of the institutional walls, in an attempt to tap into the wisdom innate within our bodies, in an attempt to trust the wisdom of the land, how might we be in relationship to the text alongside one another?

Your favorite elements of a college lecture (the discussion), meets embodiment explorations, meets community engagement, meets reading circle adjacent!

We will gather for a small meditation and check-in, followed by a quick guided movement, reading of our texts together, discussion, followed by more movement, creative exploration (writing/drawing/making of any kind), before we close out with a final discussion time.

Sliding scale of $15-35 for drop-in (actual cost $25).
Sliding scale of $80-$240 for the 8 week series (actual cost $160, totaling $20 per class).
Sliding scale of $40-$120 for 4 week series
(actual cost $80, totaling $20 per class).

PASSES CAN BE PURCHASED HERE

This is for all people wanting to explore embodiment, somatics, writings, world building/dreaming alongside others in community. All bodies, physical abilities**, and experiences to writing, academic texts, somatics, the arts, and more are welcomed.

Devin Shaffer is a New York-based musician and artist fusing folk music, ambient experimentations, field recordings and archival audio. Her latest album, Patience (2025) - a radiant minimalist record of songs woven with piano, harp and delicate percussion - confirms her place at the forefront of the new avant-garde folk scene.

Cancer House is a Chicago-based quartet known for a dark, brooding, and slow-burning mix of 1990s slowcore and post-rock.

Lia Kohl is a cellist, composer, and sound artist based in Chicago. Her work centers curiosity and patience, an exploration of the mundane and profound possibilities of sound. liairenekohl.com

GROUP SHAKE
Apr
22

GROUP SHAKE

facilitated by Dana Mulligan.

GROUP SHAKE is a collective solo durational movement practice. After a short introduction, we will move to music for an hour, focusing on shaking and rocking and allowing the body to move naturally--free from concerns about skill, rhythm, or appearance. Afterwards, there will be a closing circle to share anything that arose during the shake. This is a space for tending to your own body in community, without touch or interaction with others. It may resemble dancing, but the intention of this practice is to release tension and energy. Shaking is beneficial for circulation, nervous system and systemic health, and community building.

Suggested donation: $5-15, cash or venmo at the door (no one turned away for lack of funds!)

Arrival and introductory circle: 6:45-7 pm
Group Shake: 7-8 pm

facilitated by Dana Mulligan.

Closing circle: 8-8:15 pm

AMA sunday / ft. greyout

hosted by Atmospheric Music Alliance / Stretch Metal

AMA Sunday is a recurring ambient music potluck for AMA members and friends, held every second Sunday of the month at bim bom studios.

Program from 5:30 - 7:00 PM, with sounds from 6:00 - 6:30 PM from greyout.

GREYOUT is the solo Ambient/Drone project for multi-instrumentalist Chris Puente located in Chicago, IL. Playing music all his life, he began experimenting with sound over a decade ago but never had much come to fruition. He spent much of his spare time focusing on his band, Made Entirely of Wires (MEoW) with Catie Olson and Sean DeSantis. It wasn't until 2020 when we were all stuck indoors that he really began to take Greyout more seriously, using it as a vessel to channel all the isolation, loneliness, and the general weirdness of the times into his music. In 2021 he put out his first self-released solo album as Greyout entitled This Veil. He's currently still working with MEoW, as well as Skeleton Crew (a project with trumpet player Alex Massa).

Access:
Free for AMA members plus one guest with RSVP. While membership is encouraged, one-time supporters may purchase tickets via this page.

This event is a potluck and cassette swap! Come as you are, bring a dish or tape if you can, and plan to stay awhile.

movement philosophy

movement philosophy

Facilitated by Madison Mae Parker

Movement Philosophy is a space to gather together to read writings (articles, poems, songs, essays, & more) and explore them through movement, the arts, and community. In an attempt to take the academy outside of the institutional walls, in an attempt to tap into the wisdom innate within our bodies, in an attempt to trust the wisdom of the land, how might we be in relationship to the text alongside one another? Your favorite elements of a college lecture (the discussion, duh), meets embodiment explorations, meets community engagement, meets reading circle adjacent! We will gather for a small meditation and check-in, followed by a quick guided movement, reading of our texts together, discussion, followed by more movement, creative exploration (writing/drawing/making of any kind), before we close out with a final discussion time.

Tickets can be purchased here.

DROP-IN CLASS: sliding scale $15-$35

This is for all people wanting to explore embodiment, somatics, writings, world building/dreaming alongside others in community. All bodies, physical abilities**, and experiences to writing, academic texts, somatics, the arts, and more are welcomed.
